The Volcano Island

Kilauea Volcano
Big Island of Hawaii

Kilauea is Hawaii’s most popular tourist attraction and the most commonly visited volcano in the world.  It is the youngest of five shield volcanoes, including Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, and Mauna Loa, that together created Hawaii Island. Rising only 4,091 feet (1,247 m) above sea level, Kilauea lies low and flat along the southeast flank of the massive Mauna Loa volcano.

Kilauea is one of the planet’s most active volcanoes, with a total of 61 eruptions, 34 of them since 1952.  Its summit caldera was the site of nearly continuous activity during the 19th and early 20th centuries.   Volcanic action at the cone of Pu’u ‘O’o along the east rift zone has been continuous since the eruption of 1983.  Despite its non-voilent effusive activity and its accessibility to geologists and visitors, scientists regard Kilauea as the most dangerous volcano in the U.S.

Spatter and Cinder Cones

Lava ejected from a volcanic vent may contain enough expansive gasses to tear the liquid rock into hot, irregular globs that fall back to earth.  These partly liquid deposits weld together as they cool.  The resulting accumulation forms a low, steep sided mound called a spatter cone.  Cinder cones are formed by fragments of very hot gas and rock that are propelled into the air from a volcanic vent.  These glass-like lava particles, called cinders, commonly pile up on the flanks of shield volcanos such as Mauna Kea, forming a steep oval hill with a central crater.  As molten rock rises to the surface and exerts terrific pressure that the loose cinders cannot support, it flows either from a side breach or from a vent towards the bottom.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Many sightseeing tours host expeditions to Kilauea Volcano and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where travellers can see the Kilauea Iki Crater, witness hot lava flowing down the mountain or into the sea, walk through a lava tube, hike over a recent lava field, visit a lush fern jungle and a black sand beach, and learn about the geographic history of the region.  Charter tour companies usually feature a narrator, various equipment, a snack or meal, and transportation to and from your resort.  Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, located in Waikoloa, provides helicopter excursions featuring stunning views of Kilauea and the surrounding landscape that are only accessible from the air.
